Born in Newfoundland, Kate is an award-winning fiddler, classical violinist and singer. She has been playing violin since the age of four and thrives on a variety of styles from folk to jazz and classical. She holds violin performance degrees, a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching, and a PhD specializing in Irish music. Balancing a career as a professional musician and part-time professor, Kate loves working with students of all ages and abilities, focusing on community music making.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

Coming from a diverse musical background, my workshops are rooted in community music-making and improvisation. Folk music is a wonderful lens through which to learn about Canadian history, immigration, language and culture. I encourage schools to book a One Day Event so that I can incorporate a performance - a valuable opportunity for students to see how folk music presently exists and can be performed today.

One workshop option is based on the tradition of sea shanty singing. Initially work songs, sea shanties were sung for the purpose of accompanying a job on a ship; today, shanties are a wonderful tool for teaching music and allowing everyone to participate, regardless of musical background or ability.

Another workshop I offer is based on fiddling traditions in Canada. Initially an oral tradition, I will demonstrate different types of fiddle tunes, and students will become involved in creating their own fiddle tune in collaboration with me.

No musical experience necessary!
