SCHOOL SONGWRITING & RECORDING EXPERIENCE with David Hodges

This dynamic four-day workshop invites students to create original songs together — from the spark of an idea to a fully recorded and produced track — all guided by songwriter, producer, and educator David Hodges. Students engage in hands-on learning through creative writing, music recording, and collaborative expression, all while exploring meaningful themes such as love, resilience, hope, and joy.

DAY 1: Songwriting Workshop
David facilitates a creative group songwriting session with up to 20 students per class. Through engaging prompts, rhythm exercises, and storytelling, students contribute lyrics and melodies that reflect their collective voice. Up to four class songs can be written in one day, each unique to the group’s ideas and energy.

DAY 2–3: Recording Workshop
Each student has the opportunity to record their line in a mobile studio setup brought by the artist. The recording process is transparent and participatory: students observe how songs are produced, gain exposure to music technology, and connect the experience to curriculum-based learning in media arts, English, and music. Songs are finalized the same day recordings are completed.

DAY 4: Presentation or Content Creation (Optional)
Teachers may choose between two exciting culminating activities:

  • OPTION 1: A content creation workshop, where students produce short, creative videos using school tablets or phones to accompany their songs.
  • OPTION 2: A school-wide assembly or class showcase, where the completed songs are presented in a celebratory live event.
