Kym Dominique-Ferguson is a poet by birth, a theatre performer & filmmaker by training, and a producer by nurture. For over a 25 years he has serenaded Montréal and international audiences with his blending of spoken word poetry and theatre. Teaching the written & spoken word requires patience & adaptability to the students' needs, this is how he approaches every workshop he produces. The objective is to inspire critical thinking and creativity leading them to write & perform their own words.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

To me an immersive experience is the most effective way of inspiring young people to create. So my approach is through multiple steps: the first one is to engage them through a demonstration of the power of spoken word - either through my own performance, or if the venue allows a video presentation of a couple of performances that can be viewed online - via youtube or otherwise. Secondly, through discussion, I like to find out what are the topics that the students are interested in, so while I do want to explore the theme of bullying for these workshops, I encourage the students to feel free to explore other things. Thirdly following the discussion we have a writing session - where we "free write" - which is writing without prior thought. Allowing the words to flow out of the mind, through fingertips onto paper. We may then do some workshopping of the pieces they create, to lead us to the final step which is the presentation/performance this step is to encourage expression of self.
