MAKING PAPALOTES (KITES) with Maria Ezcurra

In this hands-on workshop, participants will create papalotes (kites) inspired by migratory animals like birds and butterflies. Rooted in Mexican culture, kite-making becomes a shared activity, fostering creativity and community. Participants of all ages will
design and decorate kites, with the option to fly them outdoors or display them as part of a collective installation. The workshop will highlight the endangered monarch butterfly, which travels every year between Canada and Mexico, drawing attention to social
and environmental themes such as migration, belonging, and conservation, while celebrating craftsmanship and the joy of making together.

Themes:

The workshop provides an opportunity for discussion about belonging in Quebec as a member of the BIPOC community.

The workshop has some clear elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts obviously…, and Mathematics)

Materials: Thin bamboo sticks or wooden dowels (for the frame), Colorful tissue paper or lightweight plastic (for the kite body), String or kite twine, Scissors, Tape or glue, Ruler, Markers, paints, or crayons (for decorating), Ribbon or fabric strips (for the tail).

Grade Levels: Elementary Cycles 2,3, Secondary Grades 7-11
