THE HIP-HOP POETRY JAM with Rupert Common
Improvisation or “freestyle,” as it is referred to in Hip-Hop spaces, is an important ingredient to any creative process, but is often overlooked with regards to poetry in the classroom. In the Hip-Hop & Poetry workshop students will be introduced to the foundations of lyrical improvisation and use these techniques to write verses of their own. Poetry styles incorporated will be: spoken-word, page poetry and rap. Students will be free to use rhythm and rhyme as they please and need not conform to one genre. We are exploring words in their relation to space and within the context of poets immemorial.
Themes: The workshop provides an opportunity for discussion about belonging in Quebec as a member of the BIPOC and/or LGBTQ2S+ communities.
Materials: pencils and pens, paper. audio recording device for capturing students performances.
Grade Levels: Elementary Cycles 3, Secondary Grades 7-11
