Drawn to cinema via politics & film journalism, Stefan Verna quickly realized that filmmaking could be an agent of transformation for human rights and environmental issues. Teaching the craft of video to inner city or Indigenous youth has been one of his most enriching experiences. His videos have been shown on CBC Newsworld, CBC Arts, APTN, Canal D, AJ+, Bravo, Canal Evasion and 60Sec Docs. He's very comfortable traveling as a one man crew in tough environments and speaks Eng, French & Spanish.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

In the age of social media, I think that encouraging youth to re-appropriate video skills can bring out the best of what social media platforms can offer. Making films is a great path to self-expression and self-knowledge. The creative process allows you to better understand yourself and the world that you are part of. As a collaborative art form, filmmaking is also a great way to develop good social skills. As an instructor I teach the fundamentals and adapt to the skill levels of groups that I work with. Making videos should bring joy despite all the technical skills involved. My teaching technique is to engage with the students on a personal level before discussing the medium we are about to work with. Knowing who my students are and learning what motivates or scares them is fundamental to my pedagogical method.
