I am a professional singer-songwriter with eight albums and an extensive touring history in Canada, the US and Europe. I have given songwriting and music workshops in schools since 2000, and have developed extended programs with schools and worked with a number of groups.
I teach songwriting and creativity, helping young people bypass their own internal critic to allow themselves the joy of creation. Over the years, I have developed techniques that inspire, engage and empower youth.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

I enjoy working with kids and youth of all ages, and I know the value of songwriting and creativity. I also know the value of understanding a bit of the history of western popular music, through the blues, which is the root of most styles we listen to today.

I use a bit of history to enter the world of songwriting. As we explore both, I work to keep students highly engaged in whatever activity we are doing. I keep the segments short and focused and I ensure we share our creative work with each other. We enter a zone where we are free to express ourselves and we support others in that activity. This activity is suitable for students from grade 3 to CEGEP.

I also offer a series of four workshop entitled "4 Melodies, 4 Moments - A Selective History of Popular Music" which explores four key songs from the past in the context of their musical and cultural history, and serves as a fascinating introduction into the history of Western popular music.

One-Day Event Description

A Journey into Creativity and Songwriting

Award-winning songwriter and performer Rob Lutes will take students on a creative journey into the world of popular music. Through performances of, and telling the stories behind, some important and well-known historical songs and some of his own works, Rob will introduce some simple, effective ideas around creativity and songwriting. After leading a songwriting activity with the entire group, Rob will organize smaller groups who will collaborate (with his assistance) to write their own songs to be performed by members of the group with Rob. Rob will also do a Q-and-A around his career in the arts.

61-90 students per group

Happy to cater this event to specific needs. I work with groups of different sizes frequently so large groups can work and I will adjust the songwring activities accordingly. I may bring a second musician for the performance part of the event.
