Holly Hilts is a designer, production manager & web developer based in Montréal. She fell in love with stage design as a student of McGill and has since participated in Black Theatre Workshop's Artist Mentorship Program, as well as designed and built shows with independent companies around Montréal. In Holly's youth, theatre seemed to be a place just for actors, but she has since seen the possibilities that theatre presents and is excited to share the magic of building worlds with students.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

In this workshop, students will read an excerpt/scene from a play (can be a play related to class or even a chapter from a novel they have been discussing) and we will pull out themes, colours, feelings, and keywords from the text to direct our use of space. By the end of the workshop, they will have planned out and executed a mini version of the stage they have designed. This workshop is flexible in that we could have them design just the stage and create a maquette, or they could design all parts of the physical world of the story (set, costume, props) to create a design folder. Another option worth discussing would be the possibility of building a piece of the set together in full scale, or bringing elements together (rather than building) to create a world for the characters. My approach is unique because of my experience in both design and production - so we can happily explore how to make new and beautiful spaces from materials already in existence or old items needing a new use.
