Fana Soro, the group leader of Masabo, is a hereditary master of the balafon, West Africa's big wooden xylophone. Fana hails from the Senoufo tribe in northern Cote d'Ivoire and spent 9 years as a member of the prestigious Ballet National de Cote d'Ivoire touring England, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, Martinique and West Africa. In 1990, he moved to Norway to perform throughout the Norwegian educational system. In 1997, Fana moved to Canada and formed Masabo.

Yamo! Yamo! - Performance

Yamo! Yamo! "Yamo! Yamo!" means" Hello! How are you?” in Baoulé, one of the 63 languages spoken in Côte d'Ivoire. Fana Soro, master musician and hereditary dancer of the Senoufo people, shares the ancestral arts of West Africa. The music features the balafon and the djembe, as well as various other traditional instruments.

Drumming Workshop

Fana Soro introduces students to traditional rhythms and songs of the djembé, West Africa’s most popular drum. Students will gain a basic understanding of the drumming connected to the dances and songs of the Senoufo Culture. (For online workshops, school must provide percussion instruments)

Dance Workshops

Fana Soro, a professional West African dancer will teach students movements and the meanings behind the high-energy dances of Côte d’Ivoire. The students will also experience the joy of working together and performing for an audience!

One-Day Event Description

Yamo! Yamo! (Music Performance + Workshops)

Throughout this engaging and fun 1-hour performance, Fana Soro, master musician and hereditary dancer of the Senoufo people, shares the ancestral arts of West Africa. The music features the balafon, a traditional West African xylophone, the djembe, the most popular African hand drum, as well as various other traditional instruments. Yamo! Yamo! means” Hello! How are you?” in Baoulé, one of the 63 languages spoken in Côte d’Ivoire.

A maximum of 350 students can participate in the performance.

The performance will be followed up by three 1-hour drumming or dance workshops with three different classes (maximum 30 students per class)
