Singing and playing music has always been a huge part of my life as far back as I can remember...from playing with bands, djing and event planning, all the way to performing singing telegrams dressed as a penguin and a gorilla! The idea for writing/performing children's music and teaching songwriting began while I was teaching English in Japan. I have always held a strong passion for music and I view it as a fun way to bring people together.

Creative Approach and Experiences Offered

Songwriting Workshop 101 (Grade 2 and up):
All the facets of songwriting from brainstorming content to performing their very own song in front of an audience! The class covers techniques for lyric writing, basic song structure building, improvisation, working with a partner/group setting, performance preparation. The workshop culminates in a performance of an original song by each group of songwriters.

Ear Candy! Vocal and Sound Exploration (Grade 2 +)
Use voice, guitars, synths and a variety of drums and percussion instruments to show students how they can become a 'rockstar listener'! Derek uses mindfulness meditation and breathing techniques in the workshop. There is a focus on how the physical body relates to different vibrations of sounds which create an enormous range of feelings and sensations. The workshop culminates with a sound meditation in which the children contribute their own 'personal sounds' created via the tools/techniques provided and learned in the workshop.
